Regional Dialogue, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, held a seminar on free legal assistance for defense attorneys practicing across Uzbekistan.

International experts invited by Regional Dialogue, Dr. Veronica Denninger, Director of the International Department of the German Federal Bar, and Steven Van Dyke, US Public Defender from the Committee for Public Counsel Services, shared their insights on the most 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀' 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘄. 

We hope that today’s discussions will offer some guidance on how to further develop the free legal aid system in Uzbekistan and work toward the best possible attorney-client relationship, as highlighted by Van Dyke: “Since our legal system applies an automated system of appointing attorneys for free legal assistance, we carry an extra burden to prove to our clients that 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘆.”
