Final Workshops on Pre-Trial Skills in the Regions
Final Workshops on Pre-Trial Skills in the Regions
As part of Regional Dialogue's commitment to aiding Uzbekistan in advancing criminal justice reforms, providing technical assistance, and fostering collaboration among lawyers, judges, law enforcement professionals, and academia, from 16 to 20 September Regional Dialogue conducted final two-day workshops on pre-trial detention and release, bringing together high-level practitioners from United States, Europe and Uzbekistan. The event, organized by Regional Dialogue and the Supreme Judicial Council of Uzbekistan, brought together judges from Bukhara, Surkhandarya and Khorezm regions, and Republic of Karakalpakstan and was moderated by Regional Dialogue’s international experts Gregory Weddle and Matic Zupan, and visiting Slovenian judge Ciril Kersmanc and  US Magistrate judge Jonathan Hawley. The two judges served as a window into Slovenian and the US pre-trial arrest, release, and search procedures, both designed to ensure balance between the respect for human rights and the delivery of justice. The workshops provided an opportunity to the Uzbek legal practitioners to learn of the best experiences and to shape their own model, especially in the light of upcoming introduction of investigative judges position in January 2025.

The workshops were supported by U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
